Getting Family Medicine Home 4 Dinner

Burnout and Health Information Technology-related stress are profoundly affected by the time spent in the electronic health record (EHR). The aim of this initiative is to decrease the time providers spend on the EHR by creating a learning program that is practical, longitudinal, individualized, and based on adult learning theory.

This initiative is inspired by Stanford Children's Health's "Home for Dinner" program. The UMass Memorial department of Family Medicine & Community Health's "Home 4 Dinner" Initiative comprises of a specialty-specific central EHR learning website and one-on-one Epic mastery coaching sessions led by provider Super Users.

The UMass FMCH Epic Mastery Task Force is led by Henry Del Rosario and comprises of Megan Brochu PA-C, Veronica Farrell NP, Josephine Fowler MD, Nicholas Hajj MD, and Jeannette Ryan-Alkasab MD.

Our comprehensive EHR learning program is firmly founded on adult learning theory. We use Knowles’ basic principles which is based on the assumption that adults are self-directed, learn experientially, oriented towards problem-solving, and learn best when the topic is of immediate value. In this program trained provider Super Users will spend one-on-one time with learners to self-identify learning areas and develop an individualized learning plan. Moreover, using Kolb’s experiential learning cyclePDSA cycles, and spaced repetition theory as the pillars of our framework, our coaching sessions will facilitate an ongoing process of feedback, reassessment, and evolution of EHR workflows.
